SPRINGTOWN, Texas - TCU used a strong performance in Hunt Seat Saturday afternoon at Turning Point Ranch to defeat No. 6 Baylor over the weekend, 12-7.
"Baylor has had a really good start to its season and since this was our first week back against a good team, we knew we had to come out swinging," said Hunt Seat head coach Logan Fiorentino. "I think we still have a lot to work on in preparation for our upcoming conference matchups, but I was really proud in how the girls competed today. Today was absolutely a team-effort."
The Horned Frogs, who improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 play, downed the defending National Champions Saturday afternoon, which followed up a 6-3 dismantling of the Bears in Western Friday night underneath the lights of the Fort Worth Stock Show. Baylor, who moved to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action following the two-day meet, is coming off a season in which they captured the Hunt Seat National Championship.
TCU, who outscored the Bears 694-663 Saturday, started off with a bang in their second match-up this season against the Bears, evening the all-time series at 5-5. The Frogs not affected by the cold weather had strong showings Saturday by several individuals as both Kaitlin Perry and Demi Stiegler recorded MOP accolades.
In Equitation over Flat, the Purple and White edged Baylor by one point, winning by a final score of 3-2. Perry led the way, defeating Kim Woodsum, 83-68. Other notables in the event were Nicole Diamantis and Caitlin Ader who scored victories over Lindsey Otis and Samantha Schaefer, respectively. With the win, Perry garnered her second MOP of her career and first of the season Saturday on the Flat. She also recorded her first conference win against the Bears.
"We never come in expecting to win, but we knew that Baylor was a good team and we had to perform well," said Perry. "I just went out and performed to the best that I could for the team. It was also nice to get the MOP honor."
Stiegler, who also competed this weekend at the prestigious Collegiate Equitation Challenge, led TCU in Equitation over Fences Saturday, recording her third MOP of the year, downing Paige Parker, 77-75. Kaitlin Perry was also successful Saturday, defeating Ashley Ann McGhee, 76-74. Taylor Alexander rounded out the top-performers in the event, upending Jenny Mitchell.
The Frogs will be back in action Friday, Feb. 15 against Fresno State. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m. at Turning Point Ranch.
