Lady Frogs Hold First Team Scrimmage
Oct. 31, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas
The TCU Lady Frogs held their first team scrimmage last night in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The final tally saw the Purple team defeat the White, 49-44, in a contest that featured two 15-minute halves. Members of team Purple included seniors Tiffany Evans, Tracy Wynn and Kim Ortega, juniors Niki Newton and Stephanie Faulkner, and freshmen Natasha Lacy and Psyché Butler. The white squad consisted of seniors Ebony Shaw and Amy Pack, junior Sandora Irvin, and rookies Adrianne Ross, Ashley Davis, Jenna Lohse and JimAnne Baker.
"We were a little inconsistent, but there were some bright spots," Mittie said. "Tiffany Evans had a nice game in transition, and she was able to score inside. I liked the activity of Amy Pack as well. Sandora Irvin played well in spurts, but she was on the perimeter too much."
Evans led all scorers with 18 points coming on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. After a quiet first half, the Carrollton, Texas, native was red-hot in the second stanza, making all but one of her seven shot attempts. Included in that total was two key three-pointers in the final minute of the game that gave Purple the lead for good after trailing by as much as 13 in the first half.
Irvin paced the scoring effort for White with 16 points on a 5-of-12 shooting effort. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., product made her presence felt on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end. As a team, White out-rebounded Purple by a 30-26 margin and held a dominant 12-4 edge on the offensive boards.
One player who especially caught Mittie's eye was Pack. A transfer from UTEP who made her debut for the Purple and White last year, Pack nailed a couple of field goals and knocked down 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. She also swiped three rebounds on the night.
"Amy has really improved her feel for our system," said Mittie. "Her stamina is much better, and she has become much more consistent defensively."
Both teams' point guards, Lacy (Purple) and Ross (White), also turned in solid performances. Lacy made three of her six shots, including her one try from three-point land. She also poured in five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Two of Lacy's helpers were on Evans' treys in the final minute of the game. Ross went 5-for-6 from the field and connected on her sole attempt from downtown. She also pocketed a pair rebounds.
"Adrianne and Natasha both have days where they play very well and others where they are inconsistent," Mittie noted. "Both of them show the ability to make the great play. They're still learning and if they continue to do that they'll be different players three weeks from now.
"We still don't know who our starting point guard will be. Both of them can run the offense, as can Kim Ortega. She played the two-guard spot for us during the scrimmage because we wanted to see how she handled the position. We probably won't know until Nov. 21 who our starter will be."
TCU begins its journey for a fourth consecutive conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance when Texas State comes to Cowtown Nov. 21 for a 7 p.m. showdown. A pair of 7 p.m. exhibitions Nov. 7 and 17 precede the campaign's lid-lifter.
