Lady Frogs receive Women's NIT bid
March 17, 2008
The TCU women's basketball team received one of 48 bids to the annual Women's National Invitation Tournament, the organization announced Monday evening. The Lady Frogs, who are one of 16 teams with first-round byes, will play host to the winner of Thursday's Idaho State-Boise State winner at a date to be determined during the period of March 22nd through 25th.
The selection marks TCU's eighth straight postseason appearance and first-ever berth in the WNIT. The program had never reached postseason play prior to its current streak, which includes seven NCAA Tournament appearances. The Frogs opened the 2007-08 season in the Preseason WNIT for only the second time in program history.
The WNIT's postseason format involves 48 teams following last year's expansion that provided one automatic bid to every conference in the country. All games in the single-elimination format are played at home facilities of participating schools. The tournament will feature 16 first-round games (16 teams with byes), followed by 16 second-round games, eight third-round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games and the championship.
The Frogs finished the season with a 21-11 record and went 13-3 in the Mountain West Conference for the league's second-best record. The team reached the semifinals of the MWC Championship last week in Las Vegas, where it dropped a last-minute decision to San Diego State, 69-67.
TCU rebounded from a slow start to the season, combating a 5-7 pre-holiday record by going 16-4 down the stretch for its best conference record in three seasons as a member of the Mountain West Conference. The 13 league wins tied a program record.
Idaho State posted a 20-9 record and finished second in the Big Sky Conference standings with a 12-4 mark. The Bengals dropped an 83-72 decision to Montana State in the semifinals of the Big Sky tournament last weekend.
Boise State, 23-7 overall this season, tied for the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 14-2 league mark. The Broncos were upset by New Mexico State last weekend during the semifinals of the WAC tournament, 72-66.
