TCU Set for Big 12 Road Opener at Texas Tech
Jan. 4, 2014
LUBBOCK, Texas - The TCU women's basketball team returns to action on Sunday when it takes on Texas Tech in the Big 12 road opener at 1 p.m., at United Spirit Arena.
The Horned Frogs (9-4, 0-1) hit the road for the first time in over a month and will look to return to the win column following a 71-49 loss to No. 10 Iowa State in the league opener on Thursday.
TCU was back-and-forth with Iowa State for much of the first half and trailed by just nine points with under five minutes to play, but ultimately couldn't weather the Cyclone's 3-point assault where they connected on 15 of 36 trifectas.
Sophomore guard Zahna Medley paced the Horned Frogs with 22 points, marking her best offensive output since Nov. 27, and currently ranks sixth in the Big 12 in scoring (16.7 ppg) while tying for fourth with 31 made 3-pointers.
Senior center Latricia Lovings was dominant on the defensive end, grabbing nine rebounds while swatting seven shots and limiting Iowa State's Hallie Christofferson to just 10 points after entering the game averaging 21.8 points per contest. The Fort Worth native has ranks fifth nationally in blocks per game (3.7) and has the most rejections (150) in the country since the start of the 2012-13 season.
The Red Raiders are averaging nearly 64 points per contest and are shooting 39 percent from the field, while the opposition has posted nearly identical numbers with 62.7 points per game and a 38-percent effort from the field.
Junior guard Amber Battle paces Texas Tech with 17.8 points per game, ranking fourth in the Big 12, while grabbing a league-best 9.0 rebounds per contest. Freshman guard Minta Spears is also averaging double figures with 10.8 points and leads the squad with 22 made 3-pointers.
The Horned Frogs claimed their first victory over the Red Raiders in the 2008 WNIT in Lubbock and dropped both regular season Big 12 contests last season.
