Lady Frogs Trounce Brown 80-42
TCU rings in new year with 38-point rout
FORT WORTH, Texas (January 1, 2000) -- The TCU Lady Frogs opened the 2001 calendar year by closing out the nonconference portion of their schedule with an 80-42 victory over the Brown Bears. TCU bolted out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back as the Frogs improved to 8-4 on the season.
TCU had a 39-17 advantage over Brown (4-7) at the break. TCU owned 11 first-half assists, while the Bears had just one. Amy Porter logged all nine of her points in the opening stanza.
The Frogs were dominate inside, outscoring the Bears 36-16 in the paint on the afternoon. TCU's largest lead was 46 points (71-25) at the 6:30 mark of the game before Brown chipped the lead to under 40.
TCU was led by senior Janice Thomas, who scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She also tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Juniors Kati Safaritova and Tricia Payne each added 10 points for the Frogs. Eleven TCU players entered the scoring column and 12 Frogs had at least one rebound. Junior Ashanti Nix had a career-high six assists from the point guard slot.
Brown shot a paltry 25.4 percent (15-for-59) from the field for the game, which was the lowest shooting percentage by a TCU opponent this season. The 42 points were the second fewest allowed by the Frogs this season, as Texas-Arlington managed just 36 points.
TCU opens its final season of WAC play in Honolulu, Hawai'i, on
Friday, January 5 against the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine. The Frogs then play
at San Jose State on Sunday, January 7.
