FORT COLLINS, Colo. - TCU shot a season-high 57.9 percent and set a school record by connecting on 75.0 percent of its shots from beyond the arc as TCU cruised to an 85-67 victory over Colorado State at Moby Arena on Wednesday.
"If we don't shoot that well tonight, I don't know that this isn't a dog fight because I didn't like the way we played defensively tonight," head coach Jeff Mittie said. "We seemed to want things easy, but we just shot the ball so well that we were tough to stop."
TCU (17-7, 7-3 Mountain West Conference) led by as many as 35 points, 80-45, with 7:28 to play before clearing the bench. The win was TCU's second consecutive on the road and fourth in a row over the Rams (8-14, 3-7 MWC).
Adrianne Ross and Ashley Davis recorded 23 and 20 points, respectively to pace the Lady Frogs. Ross has now reached double figures in 22 of 24 games this season, while Davis has hit double digits in 21 games. Both players left the game with 11 minutes to play.
En route to totaling 20 points, Davis set a school record by connecting on all seven of her shots, including six three-pointers. The six three-pointers for the San Antonio, Texas, native matched a career high. Davis also had a season-high four steals.
Ross coupled her 23 (11-of-14) points with a game-high five assists. Ross also totaled two steals.
"They really worked well together tonight," Mittie said. They are veterans and they've played together for a long time, but tonight they seemed to be in a good zone."
Already leading 58-42, back-to-back buckets by Ross and Davis triggered a 14-0 run by TCU to extend its lead to 30, 70-42. The Lady Frogs extended their run to 22-3 to take their largest lead of the game, 80-45. During the run, Colorado State was held without a point from the 15:26 mark to the 9:54 mark.
In addition to Davis and Ross,
Shayla Moore poured in a career-high nine points with three treys, while
Jenna Lohse totaled eight points and five rebounds.
Danielle Nunn had a team-high six rebounds to go with three steals.
Leading 43-30 at the half, TCU continued its hot shooting in the second half by hitting its first six shots, including three three-pointers, and building an 18-point advantage, 58-40.
Just how hot was TCU from the field? If you throw out Hanna Biernacka's 1-for-7 start, the Lady Frogs began the game 22-of-27 from the field.
TCU outscored CSU 31-10 in bench point and 12-0 in fast-break points. The Lady Frogs made a season-best 33-of-57 shots from the floor and 12-of-16 from beyond the arc to set a school record.
In the first half, TCU scorched the nets and built a 13-point lead at the break, 43-30, after shooting 63.0 percent from the floor (17-27). Nine players scored in the first half, led by Ross' 13 points. The Rams hit 9-of-24 shots (37.5 percent) and were led by Sara Hunter's 14 points.
TCU also made 6-of-7 three-pointers in the first half, led by Davis who finished 3-of-3 and extended her consecutive games streak with at least one three-pointer to 43.
A total contrast to TCU's 3-for-22 start to begin its last game at UNLV, the Lady Frogs came out on fire against the Rams by hitting 12 of its first 19 shots (63.2 percent) to build a 29-18 lead with 5:58 to play in the first.
The Lady Frogs led by as many as 14 in the first half at 38-24 with 2:44 to play. TCU's trio of Ross, Davis and Lohse began the game 13-of-14 from the field and had 30 of TCU's first 37 points.
Sara Hunter scored 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting to pace the Rams.
TCU will return home to face Air Force at 2 p.m. Saturday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The game with the Falcons will mark the first of three straight home games for the Lady Frogs.
