Jan. 6, 2002
HOUSTON, Texas (Jan. 6, 2002) - The TCU Lady Frogs (11-3, 1-0 C-USA) led the entire game and came away with a 61-49 victory over the Houston Lady Cougars (9-4, 0-1) in the Frogs' inaugural Conference USA game on Sunday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion. It was also the Frogs' first-ever road win over the Cougars in 15 tries.
It took the Lady Cougars nearly five-and-a-half minutes to score a point on the Frogs' defense as TCU jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Frogs' also held the Cougars without a field goal from the 11:15 mark until the 4:09 mark. TCU's largest advantage of the half was 22-9 with four minutes remaining in the stanza.
TCU led 26-18 at intermission by limiting Houston to just .189 shooting in the first half (7-of-37). Houston also shot just 4-of-11 (.364) from the free throw line. The taller Lady Frogs were tough for the Cougars to contend with, as TCU swatted six shots in the first half.
The Lady Frogs struggled to pull away however, and Houston climbed to within two at one point. But TCU was able to make enough shots down the stretch to grab a 12-point victory.
For the game, Kati Safaritova and Grace Gantt were 16-for-24 (.667), but the rest of the squad went a combined 9-for-36 (.250) from the floor. Safaritova continued her hot play, scoring a team-high 26 points in the contest. She has now led the team in scoring five of the last six games. She was followed by Gantt, who added her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Houston became the fifth team held to under 50 points this season.
The Frogs are now 5-23 all-time against their former Southwest
Conference rival. TCU completes its home-and-home series with Houston at
Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth on Sunday, Jan. 13. The game, which
