No. 19 Lady Frogs Fall Short To No. 5 Tennessee, 74-66
Jan. 2, 2004
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Tasha Butts scored 19 points and No. 5 Tennessee overcame a season-high 24 turnovers to hold off No. 19 TCU 74-66 on Friday night. Tennessee (9-1) is 211-19 since the 1997 NCAA tournament, a winning percentage of better than 91 percent. Despite the turnovers, the Lady Volunteers held the Lady Frogs to a season-low 31 percent from the field (19-of-58). Butts scored on a layup to put Tennessee ahead 68-60 with less than 2 minutes left. TCU (10-2) responded with consecutive baskets to cut the lead to 68-64 with 1:18 remaining. But the Lady Volunteers calmed the rally when Butts hit two free throws and LaToya Davis converted a steal into a layup with 49 seconds remaining. Tennessee's Shyra Ely, who had 15 points and 15 rebounds, fouled out with 3:01 left. She then got a technical foul arguing the call and TCU made three of the four free throws to come within 65-60. Tracy Wynn scored 12 points for the Lady Frogs, and Kim Ortega and Ebony Shaw each had 11, while Sandora Irvin added nine points and 13 rebounds. Ortega hit a 3-pointer to bring TCU within 25-24 midway through the first
half, but the Lady Frogs, who had their four-game winning streak snapped,
missed 20 of their next 21 shots as Tennessee built a 48-35 lead with 13:37
remaining.
