Johnson Wins USTA National Open

FORT WORTH, Texas - Recent TCU men's tennis signee Trevor Johnson was recently crowned winner of the USTA National Open in Irvine, Calif.
Johnson, who is ranked No. 14 in the nation, took down two top 15 ranked opponents and did not drop a set on his way to winning the title.
The Las Vegas, Nev., native began the tournament by taking down UC Davis signee Everett Maltby, who is ranked No. 111, 6-0, 6-3. Johnson next faced No. 69 Drew Dawson and defeated the Irvine, Calif., native 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Michael Tran of Albuquerque, N.M., was Johnson's next opponent, as the Blue Chip recruit was victorious 6-4, 7-5. Johnson faced his highest ranked opponent in the semifinals, when he squared off against Washington signee and No. 7 ranked Mitch Stewart. Johnson once again found victory with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win.
No. 11 Logan Staggs of Tracy, Calif., would be Johnson's opponent in the finals. The Northwestern signee battled with Johnson until the very end, but the TCU commit won a 7-5, 7-6 (4) decision to win the tournament.
TCU will open the 2014 spring season with the UCF Hidden Dual on Jan. 9-12 in Orlando, Fla. The Horned Frogs will host their first spring home match with the TCU Spring Invitational on Feb. 21-22, where the team will face USC Upstate, San Francisco and Lamar.
