SAN DIEGO - Nick Chappell was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year, it was announced Thursday evening at a banquet honoring the league season inside the San Diego Hall of Championships Sports Museum.
The all-conference team and the individual awards were selected by a vote of the league's six head coaches.
Chappell is the first TCU freshman to win the award and was honored after putting together one of the finest freshman campaigns in school history. The Indianapolis native went 20-10 overall, including a 13-6 mark in the fall.
During the dual season, Chappell played all of his matches at No. 1 singles, while going 4-1 against MW opponents. The nation's No. 125-ranked player, Chappell knocked off three ranked opponents this spring.
Chappell also earned a spot on the All-MW singles team. Freshman Facundo Lugones, who joined the Horned Frogs prior to the spring semester, was also named to the All-MW singles squad after going 12-8 in the spring and 4-1 against MW foes.
TCU opens play at the MW Men's Tennis Championship on Friday when it squares off with UNLV.
