Match #12 - March 24, 2010 - 5 p.m.
No. 58 TCU (6-5) at SMU (9-9)
Dallas, Texas (Turpin Tennis Stadium)
FORT WORTH - The TCU men's tennis team returns to action Wednesday, when it faces cross-town rival SMU in Dallas. First serve from the Mustangs’ Turpin Tennis Stadium has been set for 5 p.m.
The meeting with the Mustangs begins a three-match week for the 59th-ranked Horned Frogs, as Rice and Fresno State visit Fort Worth for matchups on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
TCU returned to the win column last Thursday, ending a three-match losing streak with a 5-2 home win over Sacramento State. The Frogs are 6-5 overall this season with seven of the 11 outings coming against teams that at the time were ranked No. 66 or higher nationally.
Three Frogs currently lead the team in singles play this season with identical 7-4 records in juniors Zach Nichols and Christopher Price and sophomore Slah Mbarek. Nichols has earned a national ranking of No. 99 with his strong start to the spring. In doubles, Mbarek and freshmen Sören Goritzka own a team-best 4-2 record while playing at the No. 2 position for much of the spring.
SMU, 9-9 this season, enters Wednesday riding a two-match winning streak following easy victories over Prairie View A&M (7-0) and Oral Roberts (6-1). The squad is winless this spring in nine matches against ranked opponents.
Despite not being listed in the latest ITA team rankings, the Mustangs featured entries in the March 16 individual ratings. Senior Robin Fahgen, who has not played this spring, is ranked 24th in singles, while Artem Baradach, 10-6 when playing at the No. 1 position, is listed at No. 57. In doubles, Adham el-Effendi and Darren Walsh, who own an 11-4 spring record, are the lone Mustang tandem in the rankings at No. 29.
TCU and SMU have met at least once each season since 1974, with the Mustangs holding a 25-27 series advantage during that period. The Frogs ended a three-match skid to SMU last season with a 4-3 victory in Fort Worth.
A complete recap of Wednesday’s competition will be available on GoFrogs.com following the conclusion of the day’s competition.
