FORT WORTH, Texas
Sophomore Rafael Abreu and junior Fabrizio Sestini of the TCU men's tennis team claimed the doubles title at the ITA South Central Regional Championships Monday afternoon. The Horned Frog duo recorded an 8-5 victory over the Baylor tandem of Benjamin Becker and Ivor Lovrak at TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The win upped Abreu and Sestini's record this fall to 8-3 and was their fifth victory in a row.
"It was a great effort from Rafael and Fabrizio," said TCU Head Coach Joey Rivé. "They played great throughout the entire tournament and got better with each match. This is the tone we wanted to set at the beginning of the fall. All of our guys have done a great job of working hard and pushing themselves to get off to the right start."
With the win, Abreu and Sestini received a berth into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which take place over Nov. 6-9 at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor. The championships feature a 32-player singles field and a 16-team doubles field for men and women. Participants include qualifiers from the ITA Regional Championships held across the country during October, the ITA National Small College champions, the winners of the Icy Hot/ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.
"It's great to have a doubles team amongst the upper echelon of players in the game," Rivé remarked. "We knew Rafael and Fabrizio have the ability and could be good together, but their results hadn't shown that up until this tournament. Their hard work finally paid off."
TCU is no stranger to the indoors, however, the Purple and White has been absent from the event since 1997 when Ashley Fisher competed in the singles draw. Paul Robinson and Dave Roditi formed the last TCU doubles team for the indoors in 1996.
In the singles championship of the ITA South Central Regional, Becker defeated Ante Matijevic of Texas A&M in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-4. Becker upended Matijevic's teammate Lester Cook in the semis in a marathon three-setter, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5, while Matijevic needed three sets as well to knock out the tourney's No. 1 seed Robert Searle of Rice, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
