TCU Doubles Team Reaches Championship at ITA Regional

Sophomore Rafael Abreu and junior Fabrizio Sestini of the TCU men's tennis squad penciled their names in Monday's doubles championship at the ITA South Central Regional Championships Sunday. The duo ousted Hubert Chodkiewicz and Joe Morris of Texas in dominant fashion, 8-1, in the semifinals. Abreu and Sestini will now take on Benjamin Becker and Ivor Lovrak of Baylor for the tourney crown tomorrow. Their match-up will begin when the singles semifinals, which begin at 9 a.m., have been completed. Admission to the event, which is being hosted at TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, is free of charge. The center is located at 3609 Bellaire Drive North.
In main draw singles action, No. 47 Alex Menichini and No. 63 Sestini both won their first matches on the day in the round of 16. Menichini downed Jeremy Salvo of Texas-Pan American, 6-3, 6-2, while Sestini recorded a solid victory over 68th-rated Lovrak, 7-5, 7-6. Both Horned Frogs fell in the quarters to top-25 opponents. Menichini dropped a heart-wrenching 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision to No. 17 Becker and Sestini suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback at the hands of Rice's 14th-ranked Robert Searle, who is also the tournament's No. 1 seed.
The Frogs' remaining competitors in the consolation portions of the tournament were all knocked out of contention. Freshman Andrew Ulrich fell in the round of 16 in singles to Rice's Rodrigo Gabriel in a three-setter, 3-6, 6-1, (10-8). Rookies Craig Stopa and Collin Hart narrowly missed advancing to the doubles semis, falling to Will Clinton and Andy Mack of Texas, 9-8. Ulrich and classmate Robert Gallman were also dismissed in the quarterfinals by an 8-3 count to Gonzalo Figueredo and Oscar Roman of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
