Three Horned Frogs Reach Round of 32 at ITA Regional

AUSTIN, Texas Three members of the TCU men's tennis team advanced to the round of 32 in singles at the ITA South Central Regional Championships in Austin, Texas, Friday afternoon. Rafael Abreu, 73rd-ranked Fabrizio Sestini and Jacopo Tezza each had byes in the first round and snagged second-round victories to stay alive. All but one of TCU's eight competitors won at least one match in the main draw. Sestini blanked Andrew Camargo from Texas State, 6-0, 6-0, while Abreu was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Take Morita of Rice. Tezza downed Josey Trimmier from Texas-Arlington in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Jordan Freitas, Robert Gallman, Jacob Martin and Andrew Ulrich all won in straight sets in the first round and fell in the second. Freitas managed to win the first set, 6-3, in his match with No. 61-rated Matija Zgaga from Baylor, but he suffered 6-4 and 6-2 setbacks in the second and third sets. In doubles play, TCU's eighth-rated tandem of Abreu and Sestini received first-round byes, as did No. 56 Freitas and Tezza, and Stopa and Ulrich. TCU's other duo of Gallman and Martin was dropped by Rice's Rodrigo Gabriel and Hooney Shin by a 9-7 count in the round of 64. Play continues Saturday with main draw doubles round of 32 matches at 8:30 a.m. CST.
