Oct. 21, 2007
AUSTIN, Texas - Kriegler Brink highlighted the second day of the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championship for the TCU men's tennis team on Sunday, winning two matches over seeded opponents to advance to the singles quarterfinals.
"I was very pleased with Kriegler today," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "He didn't play very well in the first set of his second match, but he found a way to stay in the match and he bounced back and played very well in the next set."
Brink, a junior from Gauteng, South Africa, opened the day with an upset of No. 5 Ralph Knupfer of Rice, 6-1, 6-3. Brink followed with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over No. 9 Sinisa Markovic of Texas Tech to enter the quarterfinals. Knupfer and Markovic are currently ranked No. 81 and No. 93, respectively, in the national singles poll.
Zach Nichols also earned a singles win on Sunday, defeating Jonah Kane-West of Texas by a score of 6-3, 6-4 before falling in the round of 16 to No. 5 Luis Diaz Barriga of Texas, 6-4, 7-5.
A day after knocking off the tournament's No. 3 seed, TCU newcomer Adrian Simon fell to Baylor's David Galic in the round of 32 by a score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.
In the doubles round of 16, Nichols and Simon fell to Rice's No. 3 duo of Knupfer and Muller, 8-3.
"There's still some things we have to work on," Borelli said. "The results were selectively good this weekend, but we have to continue to be more consistent. We have a lot of upside, and I really think we can still be a lot better."
Brink will face No. 4 Conor Pollock of Texas A&M in the singles quarterfinals on Monday at 8:30 a.m. Pollock is currently ranked No. 37 in the collegiate singles poll.
