Men's tennis advances to championship match

SAN DIEGO - The 33rd-ranked TCU men's tennis team downed 71st-ranked BYU 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center to advance to the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championship match. The Frogs will take on the winner between top-seeded San Diego State and fourth-seeded Utah at 1 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday for the title. Seniors Rafael Abreu and Jordan Freitas dispatched Dominik Kaufhold and James Ludlow 8-2 at No. 1 for their fifth conference doubles win. The tandem is currently ranked 24th in the ITA doubles poll. Junior Radu Barbu and sophomore Cosmin Cotet recorded an 8-2 victory over Christian Hand and Jonathan Sanchez at No. 3. 32nd-ranked Andrei Mlendea picked up his first win of the conference tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 decision versus Ludlow at No. 1. With the win, Mlendea ran his conference record to 6-1 on the season. For his efforts this season, he was named to the All-MWC singles squad. Senior Jacopo Tezza defeated Ivan Kokurin 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4. Freitas recorded his second win of the match by a tally of 6-3, 6-3 versus Sanchez at No. 6. With the win, TCU improved to 16-9 overall.
