TCU Men's Tennis Hammers SMU, 6-1

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 49-ranked TCU men's tennis team snapped an 11-match losing streak Wednesday by punishing No. 46 SMU, 6-1, in Fort Worth, Texas. The Horned Frogs improved to 6-12 this season, while the Mustangs dropped to 13-11.
TCU began the day by winning the doubles point. The No. 11-ranked duo of Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini provided the first victory, downing Paul McNaughton and Federico Murgier, 8-5, at the top slot. The Mustangs' Peter Oredsson and Henrik Soderberg answered with a 9-7 win over Jordan Freitas and Jacob Martin on court two.
Horned Frogs Radu Barbu and Jacopo Tezza had a chance to close out their match with Gwinyai Chingoka and David Kuczer at three doubles. The TCU tandem was up 7-6 with the serve, but Chingoka and Kuczer managed to get a break to put the match back on serve. Barbu and Tezza were able to fight their way into a tiebreaker, which they won by a 7-4 score.
Tezza made quick work of Oredsson at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0 to end his eight-match skid. Sestini, ranked No. 31 nationally, defeated McNaughton in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6(5), on court one to push the Frogs' advantage to 3-0. Martin clinched the victory with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win over Chingoka at the No. 2 spot.
The Mustangs' lone victory in singles came from Murgier at the No. 3 position, where he upended Barbu, 7-6(8), 6-1, to make the score 4-1. The final two matches at five and six singles were decided in three sets. Abreu won first against Kuczer at six, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3, and Freitas put away Soderberg, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, at the No. 5 hole to end the day.
The Frogs' next match is set for Saturday, April 16, versus No. 14 Oklahoma State at noon CDT. It will be played on TCU's Bernard J. "Tut" Bartzen Varsity Tennis Courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
