Men's tennis prevails in MWC opener

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The 29th-ranked TCU men's tennis team downed 74th-ranked New Mexico 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the UNM Tennis Center in its Mountain West Conference debut. With the win, the Frogs improved to 10-8 overall and 1-0 in MWC play.
TCU came out strong in the doubles competition, winning all three matches. The senior tandem of Rafael Abreu and Jordan Freitas, ranked 48th in the ITA doubles poll, blasted New Mexico's Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski 8-0 on court No. 1.
Senior Jacopo Tezza and freshman Kriegler Brink fought to a tough 8-6 win over Miles Bugby and Johnny Parkes at No. 2 and junior Radu Barbu and sophomore Andrei Mlendea completed the doubles sweep with a 9-7 triumph at No. 3 over Eric Conklin and Graeme Kassautzki.
Abreu, ranked 96th in singles, grabbed a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 over Parkes. With the win, Abreu snapped Parkes' five-match win streak.
Tezza prevailed in an intense match with Kassautzki 6-7, 6-2, (10-7). The Verona, Italy, product has won six of his last seven matches and boasts a 14-2 overall record.
Sophomore Cosmin Cotet registered a win at No. 5 by a score of 6-3, 7-5 over Eric Conklin.
Freitas posted his eighth singles win of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 decision versus Bugby at No. 6.
The Frogs return to action on Saturday when they take on BYU at the UNM Tennis Complex. Match time is slated for 11 a.m. (CST)
