Men's tennis falls to No. 52 San Diego State, 4-3
April 1, 2007 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 74 TCU men's tennis team was edged 4-3 by No. 52 San Diego State on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center. The win marked San Diego State's seventh consecutive victory.
With the loss, the Frogs dropped to 6-10 overall, and 2-1 in conference play, while the Aztecs improved to 12-6 on the season, and 3-0 in the conference.
"I thought we competed very well today," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "San Diego State just played better."
For the second straight day, the doubles team of Christopher Biro and Stuart Row secured a win at the No. 3 spot, defeating Anthony Gomez and Juan Gomez, 9-8. With the doubles contest even at one game each, the No. 17 tandem of Markus Dickhardt and Christian Groh rallied to defeat TCU's No. 23 duo of Cosmin Cotet and Kriegler Brink, 9-8, to clinch the doubles point.
"We were up in the match, but their guys came out and made some amazing shots," Borelli said.
San Diego State started the singles portion with three consecutive wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch the match. TCU ended the match by winning the final three contests at Nos. 2-4.
TCU senior Radu Barbu put the Frogs on the board with a 7-6, 6-4 defeat of Achim Ceban. Brink followed at the No. 3 position, as the sophomore dispatched Anthony Gomez, 6-2, 7-6. Biro ended the match with an upset of No. 92 Christian Groh, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(3), to win his sixth match in the last seven contests.
The men will return home to host No. 41 Wisconsin on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
