Frogs open conference play with 5-2 victory over No. 72 Utah
March 30, 2007 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 74 TCU men's tennis team defeated No. 72 Utah, 5-2, to open conference play on Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Frogs have now won four out of the last five matches.
"I thought it was great for us to win a match like this, being under some pressure," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli.
In doubles play, the No. 23 duo of Kriegler Brink and Cosmin Cotet won their fifth consecutive match together with an 8-2 victory over Utah's Zach Ganger and Miron Mann. The duo improved to 10-3 on the season. Seniors Radu Barbu and Andrew Ulrich also got back in the win column with an 8-5 defeat of Jason Smits and Othman Zerouali-Quariti.
Cotet, Christopher Biro, Barbu and Stuart Row also recorded singles victories for TCU. No. 106 Cotet knocked off No. 51 Ganger in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 1 slot.
"Ganger was the highest ranked singles player in the conference, so that was a huge upset for Cosmin," said Borelli.
Biro defeated Mann 6-1, 7-6(3) at the No. 2 position to notch his fifth consecutive win, while Barbu recorded a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Smits. Row earned his fourth victory of the season in a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win over Timmy Allin.
"Stuart Row winning at No. 6 singles was big for us and gives us a lot of momentum for tomorrow," Borelli said.
The Frogs (5-9) will face No. 33 BYU (9-11) tomorrow at the Aztec Tennis Center. For results, visit www.gofrogs.com.
