No. 71 TCU earns Saturday sweep against Wichita State, 7-0
March 17, 2007 FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 71 TCU men's tennis team earned their second win of the day with a 7-0 victory over Wichita State Saturday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Frogs won the day's first match against Abilene Christian, 5-0.
With the win, the men improved to 3-8 overall, while Wichita State dropped to 3-5 this season.
"I think it's obvious the positive impact that Radu (Barbu) has had on the team," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "I told the kids before today that this was the start of our new season, and so far we're 2-0."
The TCU doubles team of Barbu and Andrew Ulrich won their third consecutive match with a 8-3 victory over Tiago Espirito Santo and Kevin Gardner at the No. 2 position. Kriegler Brink and Cosmin Cotet teamed up to knock off the No. 35 duo of Goran Vujaklija and Boris Gubic, 8-5, to clinch the doubles point for TCU.
"I was extremely happy with our doubles play today," said Borelli. Radu and Andrew won their third straight match, and Kriegler and Cotet have defeated three ranked opponents now this season."
Christopher Biro opened singles action with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Boris Gubic at the No. 2 slot. Cotet followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Vujaklija at No. 1. Brink clinched the match for the Frogs, as the sophomore defeated Santo, 7-5, 6-2.
Stuart Row grabbed his second victory of the day at No. 6, with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Kevin Gardner, while Ulrich dropped Albert Ballesta, 6-3, 6-4. Barbu completed the sweep for TCU, as the senior defeated Thiago Dos Santos, 6-3, 6-4.
The men will return to the courts on Tuesday, when they will travel to face UT-Arlington at 2 p.m.
