FORT WORTH – TCU’s men’s tennis team picked up a thrilling 4-3 win over North Carolina on Saturday in a five-hour match at the indoor facility of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The 57th-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 9-4 on the year with the win, while the Tar Heels slipped to 7-5. The match was played indoors due to the outdoors courts being wet from overnight rains.
“I’m really proud of the team for being ready to play indoors or outside,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “Winning the doubles point was huge to come back from down a break at No. 1 and it really set the tone for the day. Also, the tennis that Arnau Dachs and Orlando Superlano are playing is world-class quality.”
The aforementioned Dachs and Superlano were first to win for TCU in doubles, claiming an 8-4 triumph over Brett Clark and Oystein Steiro. UNC refused to go quietly, though, returning with a win at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomores Nick Chapell and Will Stein clinched the 1-0 lead for TCU with their thrilling come-from-behind win on the top doubles court. The TCU duo knocked off Esben Hess-Oleson and Mail Ulrich, 9-7, to win the point.
As singles got underway, No. 108-ranked Dachs quickly pushed the TCU lead to 2-0 with his 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 100 Nelson Vick at No. 2 singles. Dachs upped his spring record to 9-3 and is 19-5 overall.
The Tar Heels evened the match with wins at Nos. 3 and 1 singles before Superlano put TCU up 3-2 with his 6-4, 6-4 downing of UNC’s William Parker on the fourth singles court. The San Cristobal, Venezuela, native is 10-2 this spring.
UNC squared the match at 3 with a win at No. 5 singles, but senior JT Sundling scored the fourth and final point with a grinding 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Stuart DePaolo at No. 6 singles. The win allowed TCU to even the all-time ledger with UNC at six wins each.
TCU returns to action March 14 when it travels to Arizona. After that match, TCU will play its final six nonconference matches at home.
