TCU rally falls shorts against No. 65 SMU, 4-3

FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 66 TCU men's tennis team lost a heartbreaker on Wednesday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center against No. 65 SMU, 4-3. The Frogs lost their fifth consecutive match dropping the overall record to 1-5, while the Mustangs improved to 5-5.
"I thought the way our guys competed tonight was great," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "All I'm asking is for the guys to compete and to continue to improve, and we did that today, so I'm happy with their effort."
The SMU duo of Chris Hooshyar and David Kuczer began the night with an 8-1 victory over TCU's Chris Biro and Caleb Bulls, before Cosmin Cotet and Kriegler Brink evened the score with an 8-5 triumph over Federico Murgier and Alex Skrypko in the No. 1 position. The pair of Adolpho Solares and Oivind Alver reeled off four consecutive points to clinch the doubles point for SMU with an 8-4 win over Andrew Ulrich and Stuart Row.
Brink tied the score at one for TCU as the sophomore defeated Federico Murgier in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The Mustangs went on to record wins at No. 5 and No. 6 to up the score to 3-1, forcing the Frogs to win the last three matches.
Cotet started the rally with an upset of No. 43 Skrypko, 7-6(4), 6-4, in the No. 1 slot. Biro followed with a 6-4, 7-6(4) triumph over David Kuczer at No. 2. With the match knotted at three apiece, the home crowd focused on court No. 4 where TCU's Ulrich and SMU's Alver were battling in the third set. Alver would go on to down Ulrich 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to clinch the win for the Mustangs.
The Frogs will return to action on Saturday against No. 22 Tulsa at 2 p.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
