HOUSTON – TCU’s men’s tennis team used a rally in singles to drop Rice, 4-3, on Sunday at the Owls’ Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
The 68th-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 7-3 on the year and 4-1 against schools from the state of Texas. The No. 56-ranked Owls slipped to 2-6 as TCU won for the first time in the last nine tries against Rice.
“I’m proud of the guys for finding a way to win after getting swept in doubles and under windy conditions,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “We showed maturity and poise and we have 10 days to improve our doubles play to be ready for fifth-ranked Pepperdine. To get back in the win column against those guys, things are looking good for us. Big things are on the horizon.”
Rice jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. The Owls won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and followed with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles. The match on the second doubles court was an 8-5 win for Rice.
As singles began, though, the Frogs strung together a rally that saw them win four matches in straight sets to clinch the match before Rice could muster its second point. Senior Orlando Superlano was the first to win, claiming a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Peter Frank at No. 4 singles.
Soon after Superlano’s match was finished, Rodolfo Bustamante put TCU ahead for the first time with his 6-1, 6-1 dismissal of Tommy Bennett on the fifth singles court. Sophomore Arnau Dachs brought TCU within one of winning with his 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Phillip Seifert.
Facundo Lugones capped the TCU rally with his 6-2, 6-1 win at the expense of Adam Gustafsson at No. 3 singles. Rice scored its final two points after TCU had clinched the match, including one in a third-set supertiebreaker.
Superlano improved to 8-1 on the year in singles with his win, while Bustamante upped his mark to 6-3. Dachs went to 7-2 this spring and Lugones ran his ledger to 7-2.
The Frogs return to action Feb. 26 when Pepperdine visits the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to start a string of TCU playing nine of its next 10 matches at home.
