TCU Men's Tennis Moves to 2-0 With Win Over UTA
Feb. 3, 2005
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The No. 16 TCU men's tennis team moved to 2-0 on the 2005 season Thursday, picking up a 5-2 victory over Texas-Arlington at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas. The Mavericks fell to 0-2 with the loss.
The Horned Frogs had little trouble winning the doubles point, claiming victory quickly at one and two. At the top slot, the eighth-ranked duo of Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini recorded an 8-2 triumph over No. 37 Niels Buksik and Sandy Farquharson. The clincher at two was provided by Jordan Freitas and Jacopo Tezza, 8-5, against Alberto Agis and Diego Mattar.
"Rafael and Fabrizio played very well in doubles," TCU head coach Joey Rivé said. "Jacopo and Jordan finished really well in their match."
Abreu provided the first win in singles for the Frogs by downing Josey Trimmier at the No. 6 slot, 6-3, 6-0. Buksik got the Mavs on the board when he registered a 6-3, 6-4 win over Radu Barbu at three. Sestini, rated No. 34 in singles, was a 6-3, 6-4 winner to move TCU within a point of its second victory. Tezza did the honors when he upended Mattar at two, 6-2, 7-6.
"UTA is a tough team," Rivé said. "Both teams fought hard. It was a difficult place to play, and I'm proud of our team. We took a couple losses, but I was pleased with our effort and how we played in our first away match."
TCU's final victory was at No. 5 singles, where Jacob Martin defeated Ian Vazquez in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. The last match of the day at the fourth slot between Agis and Freitas favored the Maverick, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Horned Frogs return home for their next match Feb. 6 at noon CST versus No. 68 Louisiana-Lafayette. The match will take place on the Bernard J. "Tut" Bartzen Varsity Tennis Courts at the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center.
