FORT WORTH – More than 1,000 fans spilled into the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Saturday, but No. 16 Texas A&M was too much for TCU, claiming a 6-1 win.
The 67th-ranked Horned Frogs fell to 4-2 with the loss and saw their four-match winning streak come to an end. The Aggies improved to 5-0.
“College tennis was the winner today,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “This was a great atmosphere and what college tennis should be. We lost to a good team that played well. We learned today and we know we can play better.”
As has been the case for TCU through much of the young season, the doubles matches went down to the wire. After No. 6-ranked Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant claimed a win at No. 2 doubles, the No. 1 doubles went to a tiebreaker.
TCU’s No. 1 tandem of Nick Chappell and Will Stein battled with Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow, but ultimately dropped an 8-7 (2) decision on the top court. The match at No. 3 doubles, which was tied at 6, was stopped when the point was clinched.
A&M extended its lead in singles with straight-set wins at Nos. 3, 2 and 5 singles. The match at the fifth singles court was the fourth point for the Aggies and put the match out of reach for TCU.
Orlando Superlano provided the high point for TCU at No. 4 singles, knocking off Vinsant, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 1-0 (2) after the match had been clinched. JT Sundling also hung tough for the Frogs, but dropped a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 1-0 (7).
TCU returns to action Feb. 5 when it travels to Stanford to take on the No. 18-ranked Cardinal.
