Women's team sets five pool records at Southwest Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Nov. 20, 2000)--The TCU men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued their fall seasons with a three-team dual meet in Missouri on Saturday. The women defeated both Western Illinois (65-36) and Southwest Missouri State (68-45), while the men downed Western Illinois (75-37), but fell to Southwest Missouri State (78-35).

Junior Jamie MacCurdy had a stellar meet, winning each of her three individual events: the 1000 freestyle in 10:32.95, the 200 individual medley in 2:08.08 and the 500 freestyle in 5:06.16. The times in the 200 IM and the 500 free were new pool records.

A trio of TCU freshmen also had impressive afternoons. Erin Irons placed first with a new pool standard in the 200 backstroke (2:05.91) and also won the 200 freestyle (1:55.72), while Ashleigh Bastak claimed both the 50 freestyle (:24.44) and the 100 free (:53.63). Fellow newcomer Jamie Robinson took the crown in the 200 breaststroke with a pool-record time of 2:21.19. TCU's 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Bastak, senior Heather Vance, junior Marisa Schenke and sophomore Andrea Stevens, set the fifth and final pool record with a winning time of 3:37.71.

On the men's side, senior Ryan Mammarella touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:42.82), sophomore Jeff Parkinson was victorious in the 100 freestyle (:46.87) and junior Scott Adkins won the 200 breaststroke (2:05.83). In the 400 medley relay, sophomore Aaron Ewert notched a pool record with a lead-off time of :50.65 in his 100 backstroke leg. The men had a total of seven second-place finishes in the 13-event meet.

After starting out the season 0-2, the Lady Frogs have recorded six straight wins to improve to 6-2 overall. The men also have garnered five wins in their last six outings and stand 5-2. The six wins already equals the women's victory total from the 1999-2000 season, when the squad went 6-5.

"We're really happy with our records and where we are right now," head coach Richard Sybesma said. "We feel like we're where we want to be at this point. We were disappointed to lose to Southwest Missouri State on the men's side, but we felt like we swam well."

Next up for TCU's teams is the University of Texas Invitational, a three-day meet that runs from Friday, December 1 through Sunday, December 3.
