TCU Women and Men Sweep TCU Classic
Frog swimmers race past competition on Saturday
FORT WORTH, Texas (January 13, 2000)--The Horned Frog women's and men's swimming and diving teams both were victorious at the annual TCU Classic swim meet, a two-day event held at the Rickel Center on the university campus. The TCU women dominated the meet with 343 points, which pushed them past their four opponents: New Mexico State (265), Houston (250), North Texas (195) and Louisiana-Monroe (193). The Frog men beat their lone competitor, Louisiana-Monroe, by a score of 354-274. TCU's women completed a sweep of the meet's five relay events, as junior Jamie MacCurdy, freshman Erin Irons, sophomore Andrea Stevens and junior Marisa Schenke claimed the 400 freestyle relay in 3:37.71 and Stevens, senior Heather Vance, sophomore Kate Swearingen and Schenke took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.47. On Friday night, the Frogs won the 400 medley relay, the 800 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. MacCurdy led the way individually at the TCU Classic, winning each of the six events she entered. After winning three times on Friday, MacCurdy completed a perfect weekend by claiming first in the 400 free relay, the 200 backstroke (2:06.60) and the 200 individual medley (2:08.22). Other individual winners for TCU on Saturday included sophomore Melissa Powell in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.98) and junior Marisa Schenke in the 100 freestyle (:54.33). Of the meet's 19 events, TCU's men snagged the first place prize in all but one race. The men also swept each of the five relay events over the two days. On Saturday, the team of senior Ryan Mammarella, sophomore Jeff Parkinson, sophomore Aaron Ewert and sophomore Dana Kizer combined to win both the 400 free relay (3:12.94) and the 200 free relay (1:26.76). In the individual heats, Mammarella finished first in the 500 freestyle (4:39.93), Ewert won the 200 backstroke (1:52.37), junior Scott Adkins touched first in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.45), Parkinson took the 100 freestyle (:46.99), junior Josh Pipes won the 200 butterfly (1:55.05) and sophomore Clint Barghi won the 200 individual medley (1:55.31). The TCU women return to action with a home dual meet against the SMU Mustangs on Wednesday, January 17 at 7:00 p.m. The men host the Florida Gators at the Rickel Center on Saturday, January 20 at 1:00 p.m. |
