TCU Golfers In Fifth After Two Rounds Of Prestige
Nov. 1, 2004
LA QUINTA, Calif. - With a score of 621 (+45), the seventh-ranked TCU Horned Frogs are in fifth place among 16 teams following the first two rounds of the Prestige at PGA West. The men's golf team rebounded from a 27-over 315 to notch a 306 (+18) on the next 18 holes. The strong second round helped the Frogs move up five spots in the standings by the close of the first day.
UC Davis leads the 16-team tournament, which is being contested at the La Quinta Desert Course, with a score of 609 (+33). The Horned Frogs are among seven teams within 14 strokes of the lead. The difficult course did not allow any team to break the 300 barrier, and just one of the 168 individual rounds was under par.
TCU senior J.J. Killeen recorded a two-round 149 (+5), which is good for a share of third place in the individual race. Killeen's even-par 72 in the second round was the best score by any of the 84 golfers in the afternoon session. He is seeking his fourth career top-10 finish and his first this season. The Lubbock product's career-best placement is a tie for sixth, achieved most recently at the Boilermaker Invitational last spring.
David Schultz is also among the event's top 20 (T-15th) after a 36-hole sum of 154 (+10). In round two, Schultz was six-over through the first five holes before the senior got red hot. The Fargo., N.D. native had a five-hole stretch in which he bagged one eagle and registered three birdies. He is eyeing his third consecutive top-20 finish this fall.
True freshman James Sacheck, playing in his first career college tournament, is tied for 35th place. The native of Zionsville, Ind., posted a two-round 158 (+14). His score of 77 matched the Horned Frogs' best effort in the first round. Meanwhile, junior Drew Pigg is tied for 45th place at 160 (+16), while freshman Franklin Corpening sits in a share of 70th place at 168 (+24). Both golfers were four strokes better in their afternoon rounds.
The third and final round of the Prestige of PGA West will be played on Tuesday beginning at 7 a.m. (PT). Live scoring of the tournament is available on www.golfstat.com.
