Rubinson Lands WAC Golfer of the Month Honors
FORT WORTH, TEXAS (October 3, 2000) -- After three top 20 finishes in as many September events, sophomore Adam Rubinson was selected as the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Month for men's golf. His consistency also moved him into the 18th position in the Golfweek/Sagarin Men's Top 100 rankings by the month's end.
"I'm excited because it means that a lot of hard work is finally paying off," Rubinson said. "I've worked a lot at both the physical and mental aspects of the game and I'm happy to see that they're coming together. Other than my family and friends, I've put more effort into golf than anything else. That's what makes it so great to see results."
Rubinson, who redshirted the 1999-2000 season after playing as a freshman, paced the Horned Frogs in his first month back in competitive collegiate action. He opened the fall season with a four-under-par 212 (68-71-73) to tie for third out of 75 competitors at The Ridges Intercollegiate Invitational. His efforts helped carry TCU to the team championship in a 14-team field that included nine ranked schools.
The following week, he placed 19th individually at the Inverness Intercollegiate Tournament, shooting a 225 (76-74-75) at the legendary Inverness Country Club. His steady play once again helped the Frogs to a solid team finish of third among 13 teams.
Rubinson continued his hot stretch at the 16-team NCAA Preview on September 25-26. Competing against a field that included 20 of Golf World's top 25 rated players in the country, the Fort Worth native secured another top 10 finish, as he tied for eighth out of 80 golfers with a two-round total of 145 (73-72).
"He's played extremely well this fall and he's very deserving of this honor," head coach Bill Montigel said. "Adam worked extremely hard at his golf game during his redshirt year, so it's rewarding to see how well he's playing after sitting out. If he continues to work hard and have the same positive attitude, he will continue to have a lot of success at TCU."
For the month, Rubinson posted a 72.75 stroke average over eight rounds, with a low round of 68. Hawaii's Scott Carlyle, SMU's Franklin Hatchett, Tulsa's Kevin Henry and UTEP's Adrian Quintela were also nominated for the award.
