Frogs tied for eighth after day one at Inverness
Sept. 10, 2007
TOLEDO, Ohio--The TCU men's golf team sits in eighth place following day one competition at the Inverness Intercollegiate at the Inverness Country Club (par-71, 7,255 yards). The Horned Frogs carded a 36-hole team score of 584 (+16) and trail the third-place position by only six strokes entering the tournament's final day.
"I thought Monday's round went very well for our team considering how tough the golf course played," said TCU Head Coach Bill Montigel. "We put ourselves in a position to move up several spots if we go out and play solid golf tomorrow."
Senior Franklin Corpening led TCU Monday by shooting scores of 71 and 70 to tie for third place at 1-under par. Corpening blistered the back nine at Inverness during both his rounds to the tune of 5-under. He collected four birdies and one eagle on the back nine overall, including one four-hole stretch during the opening round that he played five-under par (birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie).
The Fort Worth native trails tournament leader Jonas Blixt (-7) of Florida State by six strokes entering the final day.
"Franklin played extremely well today, especially on the back nine," Montigel said. "I was impressed by how he played on such tough course. This is one of the tougher courses we will play this season."
Junior James Sacheck (73/74) and sophomore Travis Woolf (71/76) each posted 5-over scores of 147 to tie for 24th following Monday's action. Much like Corpening, Sacheck and Woolf each fared much better on the second half of Inverness by playing the back nine holes at 1-under par. Sacheck recorded an eagle on the par-5 13th and added a birdie on the back nine of his second round, while Woolf collected five birdies overall.
Junior Robby Ormand sits 14 strokes back at 7-over after posting respective rounds of 75 and 74, while fellow junior Ryan Ammon shot a combined total of 163 (80/83). Both Frogs registered one birdie each during their rounds.
The Horned Frogs will play their final round Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. (CT). Live scoring of the tournament is available on www.Golfstat.com.
