Senior Bret Guetz took home third-team All-America honors following an outstanding season.

June 3, 2002

NORMAN, Okla. - TCU teammates Bret Guetz and Adam Rubinson have earned All-America honors, it has been announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Guetz landed on the third team, while Rubinson claimed honorable mention recognition. Guetz and Rubinson become the first Horned Frogs to earn All-America honors since J.J. Henry in 1998, and are the 10th and 11th TCU players ever to be named All-Americans.

"Both of these guys have worked so hard on their games ever since they've been at TCU," head coach Bill Montigel said. "So it's just great to see them both honored at the national level. It really has been a special year for the TCU golf program and these two have been great leaders on a great team."

Guetz, who finished the season as the nation's 31st-ranked individual, had one of the most memorable seasons in Horned Frog history. The senior won back-to-back events, the ASU Thunderbird Invitational and Conference USA Championships, setting a pair of tournament records in the process. Guetz continued his sensational spring run with a second-place showing at the NCAA Central Regional in mid-May. His final season scoring average of 72.00 was the best on the team, and he recorded five top-10 placements on the year.

The native of Littleton, Colo., was previously named to the All-Conference USA team, was voted C-USA's April Golfer of the Month and earned All-South Central Region honors as well. In addition, Guetz won the TCU Chancellor's Award, which recognizes the top Horned Frog student-athlete in the areas of scholarship, athletics, leadership and community service. An All-America Scholar this past season, Guetz also is a finalist for the Byron Nelson Award given to the top scholar-athlete in college golf.

Guetz closed his TCU career with a tie for 38th place at the 2002 NCAA Championships. He carded a three-over par score of 287 in the 72-hole event, helping the Frogs to an 11th-place tie at the NCAAs. It was TCU's fourth top-12 finish in the last six years. Guetz joins his brother Brian, who was a two-time All-American at Oklahoma State (1996-97), on the prestigious list.

"It's a great honor," Guetz said. "It's what you work so hard and so long for and it's something that I really wanted to achieve. It's a nice feeling to accomplish a goal like this."

Rubinson, a junior from Fort Worth, missed out on an individual national championship by just one stroke. His seven-under par score of 277 was good for second place among the 156 participants at the 2002 NCAA Championships. It matched the highest finish ever for a Horned Frog golfer at the national tournament, and also tied his career-best finish.

Rubinson finished the season as the nation's 46th rated player. He had four top-3, six top-10 and seven top-20 finishes on the year. He had a season scoring average of 72.15, which was second on the team to Guetz. Rubinson's eight sub-70 rounds were the most on the team. Previously, the Paschal High School graduate earned All-Conference USA and All-South Central Region honors.

"I'm happy to be an All-American," Rubinson said. "It was one of my goals coming in to college. Being just one stroke away from being on the first team definitely gives me incentive for next year. I'm looking forward to it already."
