TCU Men's Golf Earns Third Seed at NCAA Central Regional
May 10, 2004
FORT WORTH, Texas - Head Coach Bill Montigel's TCU Horned Frogs have earned the third seed in the NCAA Central Regional, the NCAA selection committee announced today. TCU, currently ranked 10th in the nation in both the Precept/GCAA Coaches' Poll and the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, will compete against 26 other teams from May 20-22 at the Birck Boilermaker Kampen Course (7,035 yards; par 72) in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Horned Frogs are no stranger to the Kampen Course, having played in the Boilermaker Invitational in mid-April. TCU finished fourth among the 21-team field with a three-round score of 872 (+8). Eleven of the teams in that event will be competing in the Central Regional. Live scoring of the regional will be available on www.golfstat.com.
The following schools (with seeds) will comprise the Central field: 1. Oklahoma State; 2. Texas; 3. TCU; 4. Minnesota; 5. Oklahoma; 6. Kentucky; 7. Arkansas; 8. Kansas; 9. Tulsa; 10. Colorado; 11. SMU; 12. Texas Tech; 13. Kansas State; 14. Baylor; 15. Texas A&M; 16. Xavier; 17. Illinois; 18. Ohio State; 19. Purdue; 20. Kent State; 21. Wichita State; 22. Indiana; 23. Lamar; 24. Notre Dame; 25. Princeton; 26. Western Illinois; and 27. Jackson State. The top 10 squads and the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 1-4 at The Homestead's Cascades Course (6,679 yards, par 70) in Hot Springs, Va.
TCU's tournament roster will include seniors Adam Meyer (71.33 stroke average) and Stephen Polanski (74.14), juniors David Schultz (72.86) and J.J. Killeen (73.00), and sophomore Colby Beckstrom (72.61). Four of TCU's golfers--Meyer (21st), Beckstrom (69th), Schultz (83rd) and Killeen (100th)--are rated among the nation's top 100 individuals according to Golfweek.
This will be the 15th straight regional appearance for the Horned Frogs under Montigel. TCU has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in school history, including nine of the past 13 seasons. In 2002, TCU's last trip to the tourney, the Horned Frogs placed tied for 11th. Killeen is the only member of that TCU team remaining.
