TCU Golfers Tied For 12th After First Round in Vegas
March 11, 2005 FORT WORTH, Texas - In their first tournament in exactly a month, the ninth-rated TCU Horned Frogs opened the Southern Highlands Collegiate with a 12-over-par 300, which has the men's golf team in a tie for 12th place among 15 teams through 18 of 54 holes. The tournament, which features 12 teams in the top 15 according to the GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll, is being held at the Southern Highlands Golf course in Las Vegas, Nev. Arizona State leads the way with an even-par 288, followed by South Carolina (290) and UCLA (290). However, all 15 teams are within 15 strokes of one another. A pair of golfers, South Carolina's Mark Anderson and UCLA's Daniel Im, recorded six-under 66s to top the individual race. A pair of Horned Frogs, senior J.J. Killeen and junior Colby Beckstrom, are tied for 19th place after one-over rounds of 73. Killeen registered a team-best four birdies, while Beckstrom's consistent play kept him between even par and plus-two all day. Senior David Schultz (T-31st, 74) finished one stroke and 12 places behind his teammates. True freshman Franklin Corpening completed round one with an 80 (+8). He played the first nine at just one-over, but opened with a pair of double bogeys en route to a 43 on the back side. Junior Jeff Marcinowski, playing in his first event of the 2004-05 season, carded a nine-over 81 and is tied for 75th place. Among the teams competing in the event include: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Georgia Tech, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 New Mexico, No. 5 Auburn, No. 6 Wake Forest, No. 9 TCU, No. 10 Florida, No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Arizona State, No. 13 UCLA, No. 15 UNLV, No. 18 Clemson, No. 23 Washington and unranked South Carolina. TCU begins round two at 8:27 a.m. (PT) on Saturday. The final 18 holes are set for Sunday morning.
