Horned Frog Golfers Lead Waikoloa Through First Round
Feb. 13, 2003 WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - The TCU men's golf team, currently rated third in the nation according to the Golfweek rankings, posted a four-under-par team score of 276 in the first round of the Waikoloa Intercollegiate to take the early lead in the 54-hole event. TCU has a five-stroke lead over Oklahoma heading into round two. A pair of Horned Frog golfers, senior Adam Rubinson and junior Adam Meyer, scored three-under par 67s in the opening round to lead the way. They are tied for second place individually, one stroke out of the lead. Freshman Colby Beckstrom carded an even-par 70, which is good for a share of 12th place. Meanwhile, sophomore David Schultz finished with a 72 (+2) to tie for 29th. Junior Stephen Polanski's five-over 75 has him tied for 75th. TCU, which played the Waikoloa Beach course (par-70) on Wednesday, will play the Kings' course (par-72) on Thursday. All teams will play Friday's final round on the Kings' course. The 54-hole event features three days of 18-hole play running through Friday, Feb. 14. In addition to No. 3 TCU, other teams playing in the event (with their Golfweek rankings), include: Air Force, Arizona State, No. 20 Arkansas, No. 23 Baylor, Fresno State, No. 21 Georgia Tech, Hawaii-Hilo, Hawaii, Houston, Kansas, Lamar, Mississippi, Nagoya University, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, No. 18 Pepperdine, Rhode Island, Southern California, Stanford, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, No. 12 UCLA and No. 25 Washington.
