Nov. 4, 2003

LA QUINTA, Calif. - TCU sophomore Colby Beckstrom picked up a two-stroke victory, the first of his college career, but the sixth-ranked Horned Frogs finished one stroke behind No. 4 UCLA at the Prestige at PGA West. The Frogs, who entered the day with a two-stroke lead over BYU, posted a one-under-par 287 in the final round thanks to a five-under 67 by Beckstrom.

Beckstrom, who capped off one of the finest fall seasons in school history, put an exclamation point on the campaign with the come-from-behind victory. He began the day five strokes off the pace set by Stanford's Zack Miller, but registered the best final round score of the day and his best round of the tournament with the 67.

In four fall tournaments, the North Muskegon, Mich., native placed first, fifth, eighth and 11th with a schedule that currently ranks as the 15th-toughest in the country. The sophomore entered the event rated 10th nationally. The victory was the first by a Horned Frog golfer since David Schultz claimed the ASU Thunderbird Invitational crown last April. Beckstrom, who has finished under-par in each tournament this year, is the sixth different Frog player to win a tournament since the start of the 2001-02 season. Prior to 2001, no TCU golfer had won a tournament since 1998.

"I thought it was a great tournament for us," TCU Head Coach Bill Montigel said. "We're disappointed that we didn't win, but all things considered, we played well today and the entire fall. I'm really happy for Colby. He played outstanding golf this summer and brought his 'A' game back to TCU this fall."

Adam Meyer was the second-highest finisher for the Frogs, tying for sixth. Meyer also scorched the course for a sub-70 score, posting a 68 (-4). For the tournament, the senior secured a four-under sum of 212. The native of China Spring, Texas, finished the fall slate with back-to-back top-10 finishes.

Junior J.J. Killeen tied for 33rd place with a three-round 222 (+6). The Lubbock, Texas, product carded a three-over 75 in the final round to slip eight spots in the standings. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Drew Stoltz tallied a five-over 77 in the final round to land in a tie for 45th place with a 225 (+9). After a solid Monday that consisted of a 76 and a 71, sophomore Jeff Marcinowski stumbled with an 87 in the final round. Marcinowski wound up with a share of the 66th position.

The Horned Frogs have now completed the fall portion of their 2003-04 season. TCU had two second-place and one third-place in the four fall events.
