Horned Frogs Make Big Jump in Standings after 36 Holes
Oct. 15, 2007
The TCU men's golf team made an impressive leap in the tournament standings after the first 36 holes of competition as the Horned Frogs recorded an eighth-place showing at the end of the first day of action at The Prestige at PGA WEST in La Quinta, CA, on Monday (Oct. 15). After firing a team score of 299 in the first round of action, the Horned Frogs found themselves tied for 12th place in the 16-team tournament field. The next 18 holes proved to be the turnaround that the Horned Frogs were looking for as TCU posted a round tally of 286 en route to finishing the day with a tournament total of 585. TCU was one of four teams to improve their team score from the first to second round at The Prestige at PGA WEST, and their 13-shot improvement over the second set of 18 holes was the second biggest round improvement of the afternoon, only six strokes behind the improvement of Pacific. James Sacheck (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville H.S.) was the top performer for the Horned Frogs on Monday as the TCU junior recorded a 36-hole tally of 142 after firing a two-under 70 in the second round of competition. Sacheck earned a spot in the top-10 of the tournament as the Zionsville, IN, native finished tied for ninth overall after the first round of competition. Robby Ormand (Austin, TX/James Bowie H.S.) finished the afternoon tied for 20th place as the TCU junior fired a one-over 145 (75-70) after improving by five strokes from the first to second rounds of competition. Franklin Corpening (Fort Worth, TX/Paschal H.S.) was one stroke behind his TCU teammate with a two-over 146 after firing round scores of 74 and 72 on the afternoon.
Freshman Tom Hoge (Fargo, ND/Fargo South H.S.) found himself tied for 62nd overall with a two-round tally of 152 (78-74) while teammate Travis Woolf (Fort Worth, TX/Paschal H.S.) improved by seven strokes from his first to second rounds of action en route to finishing the afternoon 82nd overall with a tournament score of 159 (83-76).
The Horned Frogs, who captured the tournament title in their last showing at the MacDonald Cup hosted by Yale, still have an opportunity to make a big splash at The Prestige at PGA WEST as TCU finds itself only five strokes away from a finish in the tournament's top five. The University of North Carolina-Charlotte possesses the tournament lead as the 49ers finished with a total team tally of 566 while the University of Central Florida (570), Stanford (578), University of San Diego (581) and Pepperdine (581) round out the top five. The third and final round of The Prestige at PGA WEST will conclude on Tuesday afternoon with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. TCU Athletic Media Relations
