Oct. 14, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The TCU men's golf team opened play at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate on Monday at the Crooked Stick Golf Course, placing seventh after 36 holes. The Horned Frogs will play the final 18 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m., on Tuesday.
"I thought the guys competed hard today on a tough course and really finished strong, which will hopefully give us some momentum in the final round tomorrow," head coach Bill Montigel said. "It was also good for our two freshmen Chelso and Giulio to get more experience under their belts and I thought they both put together consistent stretches at times today."
The talented field of 14 teams struggled in the opening two rounds at Crooked Stick, as Georgia leads the pack at 9-over par followed by Florida State at +12. Only Arkansas, which sits in fourth spot, fired a round under par with a 3-under 285 on the final 18 holes. TCU (+30) remains in striking distance of a top-five finish just two strokes behind Florida and Indiana.
The Frogs struggled on the front nine of the second round but roared back for a strong finish as the top four players combined for a 1-over 73 on the final nine holes.
Sophomore Paul Barjon led the Frogs through the opening two rounds at 5-over to end Monday tied for 15th spot as the Noumea Cedex, New Caledonia, native looks for his second-straight top-20 finish. Barjon was 3-over in the opening round, but was even par on the final nine holes, while carding a 74 in the second round.
Junior Julien Brun bounced back in the second round to also fire a 2-over 74 after an opening-round 77 and enters the final day tied for 24th place. Both Brun and Barjon remain in striking distance of the top five in the individual standings.
Barrett, competing in his second collegiate tournament, led the Frogs for much of the first round and finished with a 3-over 75. The Keene, N.H., product struggled on the front nine in the second round before settling in and firing a 2-under 34 on the final nine holes.
Making his collegiate debut, Castagnara carded a 6-over 78 in Monday's opening 18 holes and showed improvement in the second round with a 75, which was a stroke off the team's best score over the final 18.
