Men's golf pushes into eighth-place finish at Morris Williams

AUSTIN, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs used an impressive 1-over-par score of 289 to move up four spots into a tie for eighth in the final standings at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas. With a 14-over total of 878, the Horned Frog men outperformed five top-25 squads at the two-day tournament, which boasted an 18-team field that included 10 top-25 schools.

Four of TCU's five golfers posted their best scores of the 54-hole tournament on the final 18 holes. On Tuesday, the Frogs were 10 shots better than fourth-ranked Georgia Tech and 12 better than ninth-rated Georgia State, TCU's final-round playing partners, to pass both schools on the leaderboard. In addition to defeating two top-10 teams, the Horned Frogs outplayed No. 11 Baylor by 12 strokes, No. 17 Tulsa by 17 shots and No. 17 Pepperdine by 29 swings. Second-ranked Oklahoma State won the team title with a 14-under 850.

Sophomore Franklin Corpening corralled his second consecutive top-20 finish and his third of the season. The Fort Worthian played even-par golf on the final day to finish with a 1-over total of 217. He is now tied with senior Drew Laning for the team lead with three top-20 placements this season.

Jon McLean finished in a share of 38th position at 219 (+3). The freshman played level-par over a final round that included four birdies and four bogeys. Fellow freshman Tom Miles (T-32nd) placed among the top 35 for the fifth time in six tournaments this year. He was the third Horned Frog to register an even-par 72 on Tuesday to wind up with a 220 (+4).

TCU's other two team members, Laning and junior Drew Stoltz, had 1-over scorecards of 73. Laning finished 43rd individually with a 6-over 222, while Stoltz placed tied for 49th with an 8-over 224.

 

 

TCU is next in action at the first-ever U.S. Collegiate Championship on April 10-11. It is the final tournament for the Frogs prior to the Mountain West Conference Championships April 27-29 in Sunriver, Ore.
