Tucson, Ariz. - The TCU men's golf program notched one of its best rounds of the spring season on Sunday as the Horned Frogs built a commanding 11-stroke lead at the National Invitational Tournament at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.

"This was just a great start to the tournament for us," said head men's golf coach Bill Montigel. "We had three guys shoot in the 60s, and every one of them finished at par of better. This was just a lot of fun watching our guys because they worked so hard this past week in preparing for this tournament. They have a great attitude right now, and we are definitely off to a tremendous start."

The Purple and White finished with a team total of 275 with all five golfers shooting par or better during the first round of action at the National Invitational Tournament. The Frogs - who entered the tournament ranked 62nd in the nation - finished the round at 13-under-par while a pair of Mountain West Conference foes in New Mexico and UNLV tied for second place at two-under-par.

Robby Ormand (Austin, Texas/James Bowie H.S.) and Jordan Woolf (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington H.S.) tied for first place after the first day of action as both Frog golfers collected a 68 at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club. In total the Purple and White had four of its five golfers ranked in the top-seven of the tournament and all five were listed in the top-20 at the conclusion of the first round of action.

Franklin Corpening (Fort Worth, Texas/Paschal H.S.) was tied for fifth overall with a three-under-par 69 while James Sacheck (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville H.S.) finished at two-under-par with a 70 in the first round of action en route to tying for seventh overall. Travis Woolf (Fort Worth, Texas/Paschal H.S.) notched an even-par round of 72 to tie for 17th overall.

"It's going to be good for our guys to be in the final pairing tomorrow with UNLV and New Mexico since they are both in our conference. It's going to be great for them from a confidence standpoint to be in that position, and I told them that we need to continue this momentum. You can't win a golf tournament in the first round, but we set ourselves up for a nice run," Montigel added.

While the Frogs held the tournament lead at 275, New Mexico (286), UNLV (286), Kent State (287) and Arizona State (290) rounded out the top five. UNLV is ranked 15th in the country while Arizona State and Kent State are listed at 27th and 43rd in the country, respectively.

The second round of the National Invitational Tournament will be played on Monday (Mar. 24) at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club.
