Men's Golf Slips Into Tie For Ninth at Las Vegas Collegiate
March 9, 2003
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The third-ranked TCU men's golf team began the final round in a tie for fourth, but shot an 11-over-par 299 in Sunday's final round to finish in a tie for ninth place at the 15-team Toyota Las Vegas Collegiate. The Frogs had fired under-par scores of 286 and 287 in the first two rounds. It was a tough scoring day for most of the field, as 12 teams posted their highest scores of the three-day event. However, Fort Worth native Adam Rubinson continued his strong play against an impressive field of individuals. He fired a one-under 71, his third straight under-par round in the event. With a score of 209, the senior finished in a share of second place, just one stroke behind individual medalist Ryan Moore of UNLV (208). It was the third time this year that Rubinson has recorded a runner-up finish. Sophomore J.J. Killeen placed second among TCU's five players. He tied for 28th overall with a two-over-par 218 in the 54-hole tournament after tallying a 74 (+2) on the final day. Adam Meyer, a junior transfer, notched a four-over 76 on Sunday to finish with a 222 (+6), good for 42nd place individually. Fellow junior Stephen Polanski, who was plus-one through two rounds, had a 78 (+6) to slip 20 spots on the final day into 51st position. True freshman Drew Pigg scored a 79 to finish the tourney with a 244 (+28).
The 15-team field consisted of 13 schools rated in the nation's top 25. The list of teams, with their Golfweek and Coaches' Poll rankings in parentheses, were as follows: (No. 1/1) Clemson, (No. 2/2) Augusta State, (No. 3/3) TCU, (No. 4/4) Florida, (No. 5/6) UNLV, (No. 7/8) Texas, (No. 8/5) Arizona, (No. 9/10) Minnesota, (No. 12/12) Oklahoma State, (No. 14/16) Georgia Tech, (No. 15/17) New Mexico, (No. 19/14) Georgia, (No. 23/20) North Carolina State, Alabama and Arizona State.
