Washington Makes Semifinalist List For Butkus Award
Oct. 16, 2009
CHICAGO -- TCU's Daryl Washington has been named one of 16 semifinalists for the Dick Butkus Award, presented to the nation's top linebacker.
A senior from Irving, Texas, Washington tops TCU with 43 tackles. Washington has reached double figures in stops twice this season, including a career-high 13 in a 14-10 win at Clemson. It was TCU's highest single-game total since Jason Phillips also had 13 tackles in the 2007 regular-season finale at San Diego State.
Washington was the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week after his two sacks and an interception in the Horned Frogs' 39-14 win over SMU. It was the second time he received the honor in his career.
The 6-foot-3, 234-pound Washington has also appeared on watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award this season.
Washington has been instrumental in eighth-ranked TCU (5-0, 1-0) ranking seventh nationally in total defense (249.2 yards per game).
As a sophomore, Washington tied for the national lead with three punt blocks.
