The TCU football program suffered a loss this week when projected starting linebacker Josh Goolsby was injured during a supervised workout.
Goolsby, a junior from Bridgeport, Texas, finished the spring practice drills as the projected starter at the "Mike" linebacker position after missing much of the 2001 season due to injury. The 6-2, 234-pounder was the starting linebacker in last year's season opener at Nebraska but suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in Game 2 at North Texas. He did not play again after undergoing successful surgery.
Junior Devon Davis and sophomore Martin Patterson are the top candidates to team with Nagurski Award candidate LaMarcus McDonald at the linebacker position in the Frogs' 4-2-5 scheme, according to TCU coach Gary Patterson. Redshirt freshman Shawn Brooks and incoming freshman Matt Hines, the only other linebackers on scholarship, will push for a spot in the rotation.
Fall drills get underway this week as the newcomers report on Wednesday, August 7. They will take the field for the first time on Thursday, August 8 at 7 p.m. Veterans will report on Saturday, with the first full squad workouts slated for Monday, August 12.
