CARROLLTON, Texas -- TCU's
Jerry Hughes and
Marshall Newhouse have been named the Best Defensive and Offensive Linemen, respectively, in the state by Dave Campbell's Texas Football.
A 2008 consensus All-American, Hughes led the nation in sacks (15) and forced fumbles (six). The Sugar Land, Texas, native was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, honoring the nation's top defensive player.
In addition to Hughes, TCU was represented on the All-Texas College first-team defense by cornerback Nick Sanders and punter Anson Kelton. Cornerback Rafael Priest was a second-team pick.
The Horned Frogs tied Baylor for the most selections (three) on the first-team defense.
Sanders and Priest have started every game the last three seasons and were anchors of TCU's nation-leading defense in 2008. Kelton averaged 41.3 yards per punt as a freshman. Thirty of his 54 attempts (55.6 percent) went inside the 20.
Newhouse, from Dallas, has started every game at left tackle the last two campaigns. He was instrumental in TCU setting single-season school records last season for points scored (437) and touchdowns (56).
Joining Newhouse on the All-Texas College first-team offense is wide receiver Jimmy Young, who totaled 59 receptions for 988 yards a year ago. Sophomore placekicker Ross Evans, 16-of-20 on field goals in 2008, was a second-team selection.
TCU is one of just three schools (Texas, Texas Tech) to place more than one player on the first-team offense.
Hughes, Newhouse and Evans are preseason All-Americans.
The Horned Frogs are ranked 10th nationally in the preseason Dave Campbell's Texas Football/FSN Southwest top 25.
