Team Notes
*TCU improved to 12-3 in its last 15 games against teams from conferences with automatic BCS bids.
*Since 2003, the Horned Frogs’ 11 wins over teams from leagues with automatic BCS bids rank third nationally. TCU trails only Navy (13) and Utah (13).
*The Horned Frogs won their season opener for a seventh consecutive season, the longest stretch in TCU history since a school record 17 in a row from 1920-36.
*TCU has allowed a total of 17 points in its last three season openers. In its last five season openers, the Frogs have allowed just four touchdowns and a total of 34 points. TCU has won five straight road season openers.
*TCU and Virginia met for just the second time in their history. The previous game was a 20-10 Cavalier victory in the 1994 Independence Bowl.
*The Frogs were facing their first ACC opponent since a 31-10 loss to North Carolina in 1997. TCU is at Clemson on Sept. 26.
*TCU totaled eight sacks on the day, with eight different players credited for at least one-half sack.
Individual Notes
*Gary Patterson notched his 74th career victory as TCU’s head coach, tying him with Abe Martin (74-64-7, 1953-66) for second place on the Frogs’ all-time chart. Patterson is 74-27 in his ninth season. Dutch Meyer ranks first at TCU in victories with a mark of 109-79-13 (1934-52).
*Jerry Hughes had a career-high and team-best 11 tackles, including 2.5 for loss with 1.5 sacks. It bettered his previous career high of eight tackles against SMU in 2007. It also surpassed a season-best total of six tackles he had in last year’s All-America season.
*Seven Horned Frogs made their first collegiate starts: linebacker Tank Carder, defensive end Wayne Daniels, defensive tackle Cory Grant, safety Alex Ibiloye, center Jake Kirkpatrick, safety Tyler Luttrell and offensive guard Josh Vernon.
*TCU played six true freshmen: linebacker Tanner Brock, linebacker Kenny Cain, wide receiver Skye Dawson, safety Jurell Thompson, tailback Matthew Tucker and defensive tackle D.J. Yendrey.
*Yendrey, Jeremy Coleman, Clarence Leatch and Tank Carder recorded their first collegiate sacks.
*Tight end Logan Brock's first career reception was an 11-yard first-quarter grab from Andy Dalton.
*Tyler Luttrell, who moved from wide receiver to safety during preseason camp, recorded his first career sack in the first quarter.
*Jeremy Kerley’s 2-yard second-quarter touchdown run was his fourth career rushing score.
*Joseph Turner’s 1-yard second-quarter scoring run was his 19th career touchdown, most among active TCU players.
*A 31-yard third-quarter touchdown pass to Jimmy Young was Andy Dalton’s 22nd career scoring toss. It was Young’s seventh career touchdown catch.
*Ross Evans recorded field goals of 28, 25 and 32 yards to make him 19-of-23 in his career.
*Tejay Johnson’s fourth-quarter interception marked his second career pick. His other interception came against Stephen F. Austin in 2008.
