San Jose State Nips TCU in Overtime
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Marion Thurmond scored five of his season-high 20 points in overtime as San Jose State defeated Texas Christian 91-90 on Saturday in the Spartans' highest-scoring game of the season.
Cory Powell added 19 points as San Jose State (6-9, 14-12) won its fourth in the last five games. Darnell Williams had 17 and Andre Valentine scored a season-high 16 points.
Bingo Merriex scored 29 points to lead TCU (7-7, 18-10), which lost to the Spartans for the first time in eight games. Nucleus Smith added 14 points and Marlon Dumont added 11.
Valentine made one of two free throws with less than nine seconds left to tie the score at 77. TCU had a chance to win in regulation, but Smith's shot from the side banged off the rim.
With 1:36 left in overtime, Horned Frog's senior guard Thomas McTyer came down with a rebound and slammed his head on the court as he was fouled.
The Spartans opened a six-point lead with less than a minute to play in overtime, making 8-of-9 free throws, but TCU came back to within one on Merriex's three-pointer with 21 seconds left.
Billy Landram sank a pair of free throws four seconds later to give San Jose State a three-point edge.
There were 26 lead changes in the game, and it was tied on 11 other occasions.
The Horned Frogs went on a 16-1 run midway through the first half to erase a four-point deficit and take a 35-24 lead with 5:04 remaining in the half as Merriex, who made his first seven shots, hit a jumper.
San Jose State rallied with nine unanswered points to close within two before Derrick Davenport hit a jumper at the buzzer as TCU took a 41-37 halftime lead.
