Frogs Run Record to 7-2
FORT WORTH, TEXAS (December 18, 2000) -- Marlon Dumont
scored a
season-high 15 points and TCU, the nation's top scoring team,
overcame
Princeton's slow-down tactics to post an easy 76-45 victory at
Daniel-Meyer
Coliseum on Monday.
Dumont, making his first start of the season, hit
six-of-seven shots
from the field and all three free throws in 20 minutes of action.
Ryan
Carroll and Derrick Davenport were the only other Frogs in double
figures
with 11 points each.
"I was ready to play," said Dumont. "This was really tough
for us.
We're used to running teams up and down the floor. We should chalk
it up to
experience. It's very hard to keep the concentration against that
style of
play. We kept on pushing the ball down the floor and let the
defense work
for us."
The Frogs scored the game's first four points and never
looked back.
They held Princeton to just nine points through the game's first
14 minutes
while opening up a 13-point advantage. TCU went into the
intermission with a
30-21 lead.
The Horned Frogs opened the second half with a quick 7-0
run to open
a comfortable 37-21 lead, then slowly widened the gap throughout
the period,
with most of the damage coming at the free throw line.
"We did a good job tonight," said TCU coach Billy Tubbs.
"We were
off for nine days and were a little rusty. Our defense did an
excellent job
tonight. Princeton is one of the best teams in the nation running
the kind
of offense they run and I only remember one layup off their
half-court
offense. I never was satisfied or felt we had any rhythm on
offense in the
first half. We penetrated more and did a better job in the second
half,"
added Tubbs.
Neither team shot the ball well in the contest as TCU hit
just
21-of-54 shots for 38.9 percent, including just 3-of-16 from
beyond the arc.
Princeton hit 37.2 percent of its shots (16-for-43) and connected
for
8-of-27 from the three-point line. The Frogs dominated at the free
throw
line, hitting 31-of-39 for the game, including 24-of-28 in the
second half,
while Princeton took just 10 shots from the charity stripe, making
five. The
Frogs were solid on the boards, collecting 40 of the 69 caroms and
forced
the Tigers into 21 turnovers, compared to just seven for TCU.
The Frogs will be in action again on Tuesday as they host
UT-Arlington at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Game time is set for 7:05
p.m.
