TCU Men's Basketball Preview for 2007-08 Season (Part IV)
Nov. 7, 2007
This will be the fourth of five installments of the TCU men's basketball preview for the upcoming 2007-08 season with this edition focusing on the fresh-face freshmen beginning their first campaign with the Horned Frogs. With the Frogs set to play their season opener on November 10th against Angelo State University at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, the TCU men's basketball preview will feature the players who bring experience and leadership to the court; those looking to make a name for themselves; and those to keep an eye on for the Purple and White in the upcoming campaign. When it comes to rookies, many fans constantly wonder who are these newcomers; what type of impact will they have in their first season; and what type of player will they become when they have traveled the roads of collegiate basketball during their four years. While faithful of the Purple and White might be wondering who the rookies on the team are, TCU head men's basketball coach Neil Dougherty believes that those who pack the DMC will quickly come to know and remember his three fresh-faced newcomer. Dougherty believes that the Frogs landed a tremendous prospect in freshman Mike Scott (Philadelphia, Penn./Franklin Learning Center), who enters the 2007-08 campaign as the oldest point guard competitor (21), but the youngest in terms of experience. Following an outstanding high school career at Franklin Learning Center, Scott attended a College Prep School in Lutheran Christian Academy. Scott comes to the TCU men's basketball program from the City of Brotherly Love where he brings an East Coast-mentality to the point guard position. A mature, physical and aggressive point guard, Scott will give the Frogs a different look when he steps onto the court as the team's floor general.
"Mike has tremendous ball skills, and I expect him to compete for a starting position at the point guard spot as a freshman," said Dougherty. "He's an older freshman so he'll bring a lot of maturity to not only the position, but also to the entire team. He's a fierce, fierce competitor so I expect him to play a lot of minutes this season for us."
The faithful of the Purple and White will quickly remember #41 running up and down the court, battling for position in the low block in Fort Worth native Luke Tauscher (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest H.S.). At 6-11, the TCU freshman is the tallest Frog on the roster and will give Dougherty a different look in the low post with his size and length. After red-shirting during the 2006-07 season, Tauscher will have all four years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career, and Dougherty will be counting on the TCU center to give them valuable minutes each time he's on the floor. With the strength to score in the low post, the shooting touch to hit a mid-range jumper and the wing-span to swat balls left and right, Tauscher will figure heavily into the Frogs' plans for years to come. "We're anxious to see what Luke can do. As we continue to watch him progress, we'll see how he progresses with his back, and if he can give us anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes a game then that's going to be great. I think with him having great size around the basketball as well as him being a very good perimeter shooter then he will give us a different look down low," said Dougherty. The Frogs will have a second low post option in the freshmen class in 6-10 center Daniel Ford (Aledo, TX/Aledo H.S.), who comes to the Purple and White after a standout prep career at Aledo High School. After leading the district in blocked shots during his senior season, Ford will looking to make the same statement on the defensive side of the court in his rookie season with the Frogs. It's only a matter of time before the fans of the Purple and White begin to look upon these freshmen as children of their own; watch them grow up right in front of their own eyes; and feel proud to be associated with them as they become the successful student-athletes both on and off the court.
