FORT WORTH--The TCU men's basketball team held its first full-scale preseason team practice Friday evening inside the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Basketball Complex. The Horned Frogs, who worked out for just over two hours Friday, open the regular season at home Nov. 11 against Florida Gulf Coast.
All NCAA Division I men's teams had been limited to only two hours of team practice per week for the past month prior to Friday.
Players also were allowed to take part in individual fall workouts with coaches in groups of no more than four players at a time.
"The first day (of practice) is always exciting," fourth-year head coach Jim Christian said following his team's first workout. "The guys are always waiting for this.
"It was an intense, competitive practice. I was impressed with the guys' conditioning. We have a hard-working group out there that has great cohesion. They practice hard."
Christian and his staff welcomed a group of 13 players to the Schollmaier court, including eight Horned Frogs who played for the squad last season. Headlining the returners are three seniors in J.R. Cadot, Hank Thorns and Marin Bavcevic, while 2010-11 leading scorer Garlon Green also is back. Also returning are junior Cheick Kone and a trio of sophomores in Amric Fields, Thomas Montigel and Jarvis Ray.
Five touted newcomers took part in their first official practice for TCU Friday, including four players added during the 2011 spring signing period in juniors Nate Butler, Connell Crossland and Adrick McKinney, along with freshman Kyan Anderson.
Also with the team on the court were two new members of Christian's coaching staff in assistants Reggie Brown and Rob Evans, who join veteran TCU assistant coach Bill Wuczinski, who is in his fourth year on campus. Brown arrived at TCU after spending the previous two seasons at SMU, while Evans, a 42-year coaching veteran who held head coach positions at both Ole Miss (1993-98) and Arizona State (1998-2006), joined the Frogs after serving four years as an assistant at Arkansas.
Preseason workouts continue throughout the next three weeks for the Frogs, as they prepare for their Nov. 5 home exhibition against Cameron University at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Prior to their exhibition, fans will be able to earn a first look at the squad at its second annual Tip-Off Dinner on Thursday, Oct. 27 at the DMC. Tickets for the event are available by calling the TCU Basketball Office at (817) 257-7968.
Fans also are encouraged to renew their season tickets or purchase new packages online at GoFrogs.com or by contacting the TCU Athletics Ticket Office at (817) 257-FROG. The ticket office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
