Langford and Buljan Earn All-Mountain West Conference Accolades
March 9, 2009
Zvonko Buljan (Split, Croatia | Vincennes University) was selected as the Mountain West Conference Newcomer of the Year while Kevin Langford (Fort Worth, Texas | University of California) recorded second team All-Mountain West Conference accolades, which were released on Monday.
Langford became a third-time All-Mountain West Conference award winner as the Fort Worth native earned second team all-conference recognition this season. Langford finished the regular-season sixth in the Mountain West Conference in offensive rebounds per game (1.9 R-G), eighth in free throw percentage (.777), 10th in scoring average (14.2 P-G) and 16th in rebounds per game (4.6 R-G).
The 6-8 forward collected a career-high 36 points on 13-of-19 shooting, including 10-of-11 from the charity stripe, to go along with eight rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots (including the game winner) and one steal in TCU's overtime victory over Wyoming on January 21st. Langford concluded the regular-season tied for first on the Frogs in double-digit scoring performances (20).
A mainstay in the TCU rotation in three seasons, Langford has been a starter in 90 consecutive games - which ranks seventh in the all-time TCU record books - and has posted a double-digit scoring effort in 66 of those contests (20 - Sr. | 24 - Jr. | 22 - So.).
Langford is ranked third on the all-time free throws made (413) and free throw attempts (596) list in the TCU record books and became only the third player in program history to surpass the 400 free throws made for his career. Langford ranks fifth in free throw attempts and eighth in free throws made in the all-time Mountain West Conference standings.
The Fort Worth product became the 15th player in program history to post over 1,200 career points for the Frogs on February 28th, and now ranks 14th in the all-time rankings at 1,222 points. The 6-8 forward needs seven points heading into the Mountain West Conference Tournament to surpass Marquise Gainous for 13th place in the career points standings.
Buljan - who also earned All-Mountain West Conference honorable mention accolades - became the first Frog to win a conference newcomer of the year award since Lee Nailon garnered WAC Newcomer of the Year laurels during the 1997-98 campaign. The 6-9 forward finished the regular-season ranked second in the conference in rebounds per game (7.9 R-G), ninth in field goal percentage (138-of-277 | .498) and 15th in scoring average (12.0 P-G).
In his first season with the Frogs, Buljan was tied for first on the Frogs in double-digit scoring performances (20) and notched nine double-doubles, which were the most for a Frog since Jamal Brown during the 2001-02 campaign. The TCU forward is ranked 85th in the country in rebounds per game at 7.9 boards per contest.
Buljan was selected as the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week on January 12th after averaging 16.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game in victories over Texas Tech and UNLV. Earlier this season, the 6-9 forward was recognized by The Sporting News as one of the top international players in the country where he ranked 21st overall.
Langford and Buljan will lead the Frogs into the Mountain West Conference Tournament as TCU will square-off against Utah on Thursday with a game time slated for 8:00 p.m. Central Time.
